Everything you need to know before joining a paint-out.

Not at all. These gatherings are open to artists of all skill levels — complete beginners are just as welcome as seasoned painters. The atmosphere is supportive and non-competitive. If you enjoy being outdoors and making art (or want to start), this is a great fit.

Sessions run every Wednesday morning from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, from May 13 through October 14, 2026. You’re welcome to arrive and leave whenever works for you — there’s no strict sign-in or structured schedule once you’re there. We often bring a picnic lunch or go out for lunch the location is in an urban area.

Bring whatever medium you prefer — oils, watercolors, pastels, pencils, charcoal, anything goes.

Beyond your supplies, it’s a good idea to pack:
· Water and snacks (sessions are 3 hours)
· Weather-appropriate clothing and layers
· Sun protection — hat and sunscreen
· Bug repellent — the Thermacell brand (non-DEET) is a favorite among the group
· A folding stool or chair if you prefer to sit while painting

The paint-outs themselves are free to attend. However, membership with Outdoor Painters of Minnesota is recommended. There are a small number of locations that have admission fee, such as state parks. Other areas may vary, for example, if you choose to paint in the logging camp at the Forest History Center on June 24 there is a $15 admission ($15/person; free for MNHS members). All other areas of the Forest History Center are free and accessible. Most locations have no fee at all.
